Hello New Music fans! Paul and I have a new episode of Words On New Music. This one grew from a test conversation of Google Voice we did looking for an option to replace Skype. We both had recent live music experiences and spoke about Paul’s hearing of the contemporary chamber ensemble, Southland Ensemble and mine, going to a show of a violin teacher of mine, Tom Swafford who led an evening of solo and duo performances at the Brooklyn IBEAM. We discussed the new music CD release by Dr. Peter Thoegersen, a polytempic and polymicrotonal composer, Three Pieces in Polytempic Polymicrotonality and each spoke about our own compositional process and work in electronic and electro-acoustic music.

Happy March and welcome to a new Words On New Music audio podcast episode with Paul Muller and myself, Jim Goodin!
Last October when I was visiting Paul in Los Angeles we caught up again with friend and fellow composer/musician Shane W. Cadman who teaches and manages the Whittier College Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts in Whittier, CA. Shane plans and books performances for the 400 seat theatrical and musical performance arts space. We featured him two years ago on WONM and it was wonderful to meet-up again and bring this episode to be!
Among the many creative and interesting musical artists Shane has brought to the Shannon Center in his 8 years there, he has in the last two seen a dream come to fruition, bringing to the stage two celebrated, legendary musical artists who have both highly influenced his own musical life and creative work, Philip Glass and Harold Budd.
In my time visiting last fall Paul and I thought it would be great to sit down with Shane and have him speak about these performances and how they came to be of which very successful events, Glass in October 2017 and Budd in August 2018. Our meet-up took place first at a lovely outdoor sunny southern California lunch and then concluding for a few minutes inside the Shannon Center.

Welcome to the first Words On New Music for 2018! Join Paul Muller and I, Jim Goodin, for a live Skype interview of inspired conversation and music with NYC based composer, Julian Bennett Holmes.
Julian was born in New York City, in 1991. After studying with Lowell Liebermann and Richard Danielpour, he currently studies with Marjorie Merryman at the Manhattan School of Music. As a teenager, he toured internationally, playing drums in experimental rock bands.
He has won prizes including the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Composers Award, the Mannes College Bohuslav Martinů Prize, and the Second Prize at the Seventh International Antonín Dvorák Composition Competition. In 2016, his first symphony was premiered by the Mannes Orchestra, and his first opera, a one-act, will be premiered in early 2018.
In this episode Paul and I talk with Julian about the life cycle of his symphony for 80 piece orchestra, from creation to the live performance and about his composition Fantasy for Violin and Electronics.
